1 The Wimbledon Village Stables can lay claim to being the oldest riding stables in the country, with recorded evidence that horses were kept at the site as far back as 1236, and likely before.

The current stables celebrate their centenary year in 2015, refounded 100 years ago by William Kirkpatrick as Hilcote Stables (later reverting back to Wimbledon Village Stables).

2 While Wimbledon Tennis Championships are well known worldwide, this wasn't always the case. In fact, the institution began life as the All England Croquet Club, not adding the Lawn Tennis prefix until eight years into its life.

It was a further six years before croquet was dropped altogether, and the club exclusively catered for its tennis playing members.

New Wimbledon Theatre

3 The district's theatre lovers of all ages are well served by both the New Wimbledon Theatre and Polka Children's Theatre. The latter was once adorned by a large golden statue of the Roman goddess Laetitia, first erected in 1910.

However, Laetitia was taken down during the World War Two, as it was feared that her reflective surface may act as a convenient navigational device for German bombers.
